Just a note on this - certainly, a bunch of girls, including at least one
hufflepuff, asked Harry to the dance, so they weren't all just sitting & waiting
for someone to ask them.
And we don't know for sure whether Seamus asked Lavender, or vice versa - and in
my own mind, Pansy asked Draco. Or possibly had her father send an owl to Lucius
who ordered Draco to ask her.
