When I remember marking gender especially, it was because it was
appropriate to their character, and seemed to fit them like a good
soundtrack fits a movie--adds, enhances, but generally is part of the

No, Amanda, you are probably very close to the norm.
I would analogize that when I was growing up in the U.S.A. few white
people noticed
that all the store mannikins were white, that pink bandages were
called "flesh colored" as were tan crayons.
