Doesn't surprise me. I think Snape's very sensitive, deep down. When he
was a kid, he was probably a really sweet, gentle little kid, (stop
laughing, you at the back!)who got picked on so never let anyone see his
soft side again. Think about it. Someone that bitter and cynical must have
been really idealistic at one time. Snape seems to me to be someone who's
suffered severe disappointment and hurt in his life, and is taking it out on
the world.
