I'm not surprised at all that wands would be expensive in Diagon 
Alley. Ollivander's the only one selling them! Makes you wonder why  
the Death Eaters didn't try to take over the ammunition base 
first/kidnap Ollivander so no one else other than someone from the 
Dark Side would have access to a wand.
