Once they'd left Hogwarts, what would they need the map for?

I assumed Riddle preserved himself in the diary as he was when he
made it. He realized he had better not open the Chamber again while
he was still at Hogwarts because Dumbledore was already suspecting
him. He made the diary so that he would be able to guide somebody to
the Chamber.
Dumbledore tells Harry at the end of CoS that Tom Riddle was probably
Hogwarts' most brilliant student to date.
CoS was the book that got me hooked on the series. After reading
PS/SS I thought good book, but way over-hyped. I only discovered
Harry Potter this year when the marketing frenzy had started already.
