I discovered DECADES ago that I am as unable to write fiction as I am 
to fly by flapping my arms. Essays are my thing. But all you people 
in these e-mail-lists have seduced me into trying yet again -- I 
have produced more dreadful beginnings of dreadful fanfics in the
last three months than in the past 15 years!
