Evening all,

I've been lurking for a while, but thought I would offer a response to the
question of what other Snape-like characters are out there (ie, really nasty
piece of work but still on the right side).  I actually had two or three of
these, but they flew out of my head when I began to type.  So, my lone
offering is:

Thomas Covenant.

I admit, I have not read the entire series, so I don't know if he might not
have improved as a character by the end of it, but I did read the first book. 
I cannot think of any other character off the top of my head (even Mrs. Norris
or Mrs. Elton) that I have actively LOATHED to that degree. Donaldson set out
to create an antihero for his series...IMO, he did too good a job of it.
