It's been my observation that there are many teachers who regard
teaching as a dead end career-wise, no matter what prestige might
be involved.  My high-school geology teacher made no bones about
her hatred of teaching -- she so clearly wanted to be a field
researcher.  Snape probably would much rather be in the lab working
his way toward being the Jonas Salk of Wizard Potions than being
stuck at Hogwarts "teaching dunderheads".

My impression has been that Lucius is older than Snape.  Of course,
that may be because I keep seeing the silver screen actor Henry Daniel
("Garbage", Hinkle's right-hand man in Charlie Chaplin's _The Great
Dictator_) as Lucius Malfoy.
