Actually, it is pretty clearly stated (by Hagrid in PS/SS, IIRC) that 
James and Lily were Head Boy AND Head Girl, implying that they were 
both very skilled at magic.  We know more about James that we do 
about Lily, but to assume that therefore he is more likely to fight 
Voldy than Lily is simply not logical.  In fact, it seems to me to be 
a fairly sexist assumption.
