	The basilisk can't have been that big when he put it in there, and 
there's been some speculation that it can't originally have had
access to the school (because the bathroom must be modern).  Maybe the
chamber was originally built as a sort of initiation rite for 
Slytherins and  its true purpose was forgotten and the legend of the 
monster took its place. Then Riddle believed the legend and set about 
making it come true.

the sorting hat if he thought Salazar Slytherin had been a dark wizard 
at the time the hat was created.)
