Because Tom Riddle Sr. was killed in roughly 1943.  If Lily was alive in
1943, she had Harry at age 37.   This doesn't *really* square with the
"young" woman who came out of the wand in GoF.  I don't subscribe to the
theory that James & Lily definitely had Harry within a year or two after
leaving Hogwarts themselves.  I think they had this important occupation
(whatever it was) for several years at least.  I would peg them as being
mid to late 20s when they had Harry.

He said in CoS that his father abandoned his mother before he was even
born -- because she was a witch.  You could be right - he might not know
he had a son.  But, if he sired another "witch" (Lily), he *sure*
wouldn't be proud of her.
