I sort of figured, on the basis of absolutely nothing, that during the wait the
audience was given some detailed explanation of what the task being undertaken
was, and what the champions were having to deal with, etc. Otherwise, nobody
would have known what was going on at all---else why would they have cheered when
wet Champions started reappearing with other people in tow?

And I thought that probably some version of the spell that produced the
Marauder's Map might have been in private use on the maze during the task, for
surely the judges realized that in some situations the champions might not have
time to send up sparks? Or, if they have, as an aid to knowing where in the maze
the party in trouble was?

Sorry, haven't read it in a while, these may be wildly unfounded.
