I hate to be pedantic but Middlesex where incidentally I live is no longer a
county, as it is not a political or administrative region only a postal
address (Good old Royal Mail won't change for anyone) as it has been
swallowed up by Greater London. I can't tell you when this happened, but if
for some reason you wish to use "Miserable Middx" there's still a cricket
team and a hospital so theres enough precedent.
