In fact I rather think that Lewis was inspired by Tolkien here (_The
Silmarillion_ was written long before it was ever published, so it could
easily have been written before _The Magician's Nephew_). Not just an
in - joke, but that he liked the imagery so much he went ahead and used
it, figuring that _The Silmarillion_ would never actually be published.
