I kind of like that explanation for the crowds...it makes more sense than
actually viewing the proceedings somehow by magic.

I don't think so, the reason being the fake Moody who was wandering around
the maze helping out Harry and hindering the other champions. The judges
would have seen him, even if he were invisible since the Marauder's Map
magic also shows invisible people.
