Having an interesting discussion on another e-group about dragon symbolism.
Here's an offering from one of the other members that is interesting in
light of the first task of the Triwizard Tournament. Although Harry turned
out to be the best at OUTWITTING the dragon rather than 'overcoming' it,
this meaning below still offers some interesting food for thought :

"The hero and dragon is an archetypal theme of the ego's triumph over
regressive trends. It is the dark or negative side of our personality. It is
the shadow aspect, that the hero must realize exists, so he can draw
strength from it. He must come to terms with his destructive powers if he is
to become sufficiently terrible to overcome the dragon. i.e., before the ego
can triumph, it must master and assimilate the shadow. In ancient times the
dragon was a symbol of great wealth of knowledge that was hidden in the
unconscious."
