Here are a couple of recent list comments about Dumbledore:

Penny said - Ya know, you're right, and it's bothering me. Throughout the series,
Dumbledore is portrayed as wise, as knowing what's going on--although he
seems to let events sort of progress on their own rather than actively
shaping them.
storm says - I think that he has to let events progress, you know how we were talking about the truth serium and I said that you just couldn't use it all the time because what about trust? Well (for those of you who accepted that argument) I think this is much the same. Dumbledore knows most of what goes on (ok, not faux moody and maybe Rita - "Dumbledore, who after all did not have a magical eye ..:) but most of it. remember in HP1 when he met HP at the Mirror (I am not going to name it - I can barely spell the right way around) He's incredibly powerful - but if he used it to full extent he could make things go *just so* and everything would be perfect - but who learns anything? and what a sterile world. I'm having an echo of some kids book here - anyone know whick one? (not the just so bit)
He has to let ppl (all of them) make the mistakes they are going to make and see if they can grow from it. now to complete my argument I need an example when he has picked someone up after they have fallen - but I can't think of one. I've lent all the books to a friend in a supreme act of niceness (and they've had them for 10 days -I'm in withdrawl) and so that's it.

We know Voldemort fears him, that Dumbledore has a good
deal of input with the Ministry of Magic. And yet, yeah, there's stuff
going on at the school that doesn't seem right. Is there some kind of
balance he's trying to maintain that we're only dimly aware of, which
forces him to make compromises we don't know about? (e.g., in order to
keep the Slytherin house under control, he is forced by some obscure
magical rule to let someone teach potions who has a hooked nose. Or
something).
I believe that Dumbledore is wise, and that he is earned the respect he
is given by the wizarding world (and the thwarted snarls behind his back
he gets from the Deatheaters). So what's up with his bad faculty
picks? Well, I suppose he can't be blamed for Barty Crouch, Jr.--he
hired someone else, after all. But Gilderoy Lockhart? Trelawney?
Snape? Bad luck, distraction, or some other mysterious design?
Or maybe the teachers who are so terrible (Snape, Trelawney) were hired
by his predecessor and have tenure and he can't get rid of them?
(Do English/Scottish schools HAVE tenure?)
