Try:

The Neverending Story by Michael Ende
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
A Wrinkle in Time (and its sequels) my Madeline L'Engle
Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis (you can get the whole set of paper backs
for like $20)
Holes by Louis Sachar

None of them "hip" books (well Holes is still relativly new) - but all
classics that are right at his reading level if he's finished the HP books.
If he found the HP books HARD also try:

Tales Of A 4th Grade nothing (and its sequels) by Judy Blume

I'd try him on Diane Duane's marvelous: So You Want To Be a Wizard, which
has
2 sequels.
