Snape reminds me of a boy who's been ordered to look after his baby
brother while mom's at the store. "What! ME!!! What if someone sees
me?!?!" He glares angrily at the object of his disgust but does rush
over when the baby plays with matches.
I think Dumbledore gave Snape the responsibility (after PS/SS) of
keeping Harry safe and although he resents the job he does it because
it was Dumbledore who asked.
