Hmm ... I've never thought of that. However, it appears to me that the
process of becoming an animagus is fairly dangerous, and I hardly think
Snape would have had a very strong motivation to become one. I assume that
James Potter and his gang learned how to transform in secret, although
certainly nothing rules that option out.

I don't know. But I believe the answer is already available in the
'Fantastic Beasts' book.
