Department of Mysteries

I don't know if this has already been brought up, but I was listening 
to the audio version of GoF in my car today, and I picked up on the 
mention of a Department of Mysteries at the MoM. Its employees are 
known as "Unspeakables."

Now, I'm guessing that we're not talking about mysteries as in "What 
IS in spam, anyway?" So what is the Department of Mysteries? I'm 
guessing that at some point we'll find out, because there's this 
mention, and also a mention in FBWFT. Is it like the wizarding CIA? 
Is it a bit like the ID in Lori's PoU? And if it IS similar to the 
CIA, what will its role in the war against Voldemort be? What was it 
the first time around? How much control does Fudge have over this 
particular division? Does it operate more independently than some of 
the other departments?
