I think my favorite quote in the book comes from GoF...where Hermione sits to watch a chess match "concluding with a spectacular checkmate involving two brave, reckless pawns and a very violent Bishop." --I just quoted this from memory.

Getting back to Ron as Quidditch Captain, I think it is very likely.  Strategy at chess would definately work out on the Quidditch Pitch, and like others have mentioned, Ron would definately make a crackin' good Keeper! : )
