About the only shred of possibility I've seen for this is Draco's
reaction in book 1, in the Forbidden Forest, when he ran screaming from
the thing drinking the unicorn blood. That might have been the first
time he'd really confronted a truly evil thing, and he was terrified and
fled.
However, given that that was in book 1, and he's still a nasty little
*hmmm* through the end of book 4, I don't think the scare acted as any
sort of real deterrent or wake-up call.
