Wormtail [scabbers] may not have overheard that Lucius gave Ginny the 
diary. He surely told Lord V about the CoS being opened. Even if LV 
new of Lucius' involvement, why give away easy credit? You are right, 
it had no direct affect on his current condition. 

It is interesting to me that LV calls him Wormtail not Peter.
