 By the way I am very new to the 
 internet (I have been dying to get
 onto the HP websites for YEARS!) and
 therefore do not know quite a lot of
 basic stuff - what is LOL for
 instance?

Don't worry about it! Read the internet abbreviations section in the 
FAQs, LOL means laugh out loud.
