I disagree.  I think Snape specifically chose a snake to see what 
Harry would do. Don't you think that would be too much of a 
coincidence that Snape would chose a snake and then Harry would be 
able to speak to it?  The look on Snape's face was not one of 
surprise.  It was a calculating look.  He got the answer he was 
after.  Now not only does Snape know Harry can speak P. but so does 
the whole school.  There was a reason why Snape did this.

As far as Snape planning ahead, well.....he was a spy.  I don't think 
he has any trouble 'planning ahead'. If he can't plan ahead then he 
is in difinite trouble now.
