An excellent analogy, Amanda. When I read about the
house elves, I drew an analogy to another series I
read regularly, Mercedes Lackey's Velgarth series.
One group of people, the Hawkbrothers, have a race of
lizard-like creatures who serve them called the
Hertasi. However, it's explained that it's really a
two-way relationship. The hertasi take care of the
Hawkbrothers' homes and clothing, and in return to
Hawkbrothers provide protection for the hertasi.
Without the Hawkbrothers, the hertasi would have to
spend all their time eking out a basic survival
instead of developing a flourishing society. I
thought of something similar for house elf/wizard
relationship.
