Well, Morag, we've never had *this* particular discussion before ::big
grin:: You make some really interesting points -- I particularly thought of
the sock as resembling the hum-drum of daily life ("What's that dear?
Another odd sock?") of which Harry has been deprived during his stay with
the Dursleys, and for which (IMHO) he yearns. Ergo why Molly Weasley washes
his socks, Dobby (the height of domestic servitude) only gets one when he's
due to be freed, etc.

Just some thoughts.
