I replied to this a couple of minutes ago and for some reason it
didn't make it. Sorry if it turns up later!
If Snape's outward appearance is due to his lack of social contacts
and just plain neglect, then he has been this way for most of his
life. I know there is also a theory that Snape just doesn't want any
of the young students or any other young lady to have an interest in
him. How do we explain the fact that he came to Hogwarts already
oily, slimy, and greasy :) It seems he has been this way for quite a
while. I don't believe an 11 year old cared yet about the girls
looking at him or that there was nothing significant in his life.
