I agree with this, but it also occurs to me that there may be
another factor besides Snape's immediate "need to know" about
Sirius. Isn't it clear that there is very little that Snape
values more than Dumbledore's trust? What must it mean to him to
receive this particular confidence =before= McGonagall (who is
officially Dumbledore's second, who has unswerving faith in him,
etc. etc.)? I think this may be a bit of very subtle psychology
on Dumbledore's part. (And he can always bring McGonagall up to
speed later if he needs to.)
