Two types of scariness:

Scary-at-the-time: the first view of the Dementor, followed by Quirrell/Voldemort drinking Unicorn blood, followed by Pettigrew cutting off his hand. These are nightmarish, otherworldly fears.

Scary-on-reflection: the crowd alternately cheering Bagman and yelling at Crouch and the Lestranges in the Pensieve, followed by Crouch Jr happily saying he has been faithful and will be rewarded. These are scarily realistic.
