so we'd know how to say it right. I know vanishingly little about vilas,

Sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously, the veela are probably up there with
sirens and other enticing female-ish sorts of things. They have
magically enhanced sex appeal. I imagine they had a stronger effect on
Harry and Ron because they haven't the experience dealing with hormones
that the older Arthur has, but then again, the veela *did* get to the
referee....but basically, they exert a strong appeal to a very basic
instinct.
Just for grinsies, can anyone think of a creature that waylays women by
the same device? An incubus isn't exactly what I'm after, and it's all I
can think of.
