what surprised you the most?

Do to the recent thread of "why did you start reading the HP books" I was 
very curious to find out which bombshell, large or small, surprised you the 
most.  I am asking because I have passed the books on to a few people and 
its very interesting to see what exactly caught them offguard.  Tom Riddle 
is Voldemort, Cedric, etc...

For myself, I would have to say that the Lupin is a werewolf story was the 
one that caught me by suprise the most, even more so than Scabbers is 
Peter, which was a shock, but I kept coming back to, he's a werewolf??

Hopefully someone else woudl like to share.
