Well, technically we have no proof that the "old crowd" refers to the 
peers of Lupin, Sirius, etc. (the "old crowd" from school).  It could 
just as easily be the "old crowd" from something else, like the fight 
against Voldemort: In which case differences in age would be quite 
reasonable.  After all, we do know Arabella Figg is in the "old crowd" 
too and JKR said she was Mrs. Figg, Harry's neighbor, not the daughter 
of Mrs. Figg or anything like that.  And Mrs. Figg is also rather 
older than Lupin and Sirius.  Unless she drank an aging potion or 
something like that--which I concede is possible.
