And Meg Rose's mention of Barty Jr's trial reminded me that I find 
that scene, with Barty's mother sobbing disconsolately all through
the court hearing, and her husband ignoring her state as well as 
Barty's pleas, particularly harrowing.  Reading about the desperately 
sad last few months of Mrs Crouch's life was probably the closest I've 
come to tears while reading the books.
