I think it's normally a light tatoo, hidden by their robes that turns 
dark when V touches it and summons the DE.
I think when AK rebounded on V and his power was destroyed, the dark 
marks on the DE faded to almost nothing. Remember Snape and Karkaroff 
talking about it coming back and D's memory in the pensieve -  " It's 
coming back...Karkaroff's too...stronger and clearer than ever" (GoF 
p 598 US).
