I once read an explanation from an expert that both were correct.
Paraphrased, he said
'I couldn't care less' is short for 'I couldn't possibly under any
circumstances care less than I do at this moment.'
'I could care less' is short for 'I COULD care less but it's not worth
the effort to do so.'
