Hello,

Well, Harry certain understood the basilik when it was
talking (hissing traveling through pipes), but he
probably would have to *look* at it to talk to it,
which would be a rather stupid thing to do, under the
circumstances.  Perhaps Tom had to cast a protection
spell for himself before trying to control the
basilik.
