The only facts in the case are that Slytherin disliked mudbloods, 
built the chamber, and put a basilisk in it.  The rest could easily be 
legend, myth, and rumor.  

It might be that he just wanted to leave a time-bomb to destroy the 
school he no longer supported. I certainly wouldn't want to be in a 
school with a basilisk running loose no matter how pureblooded I was.
