I think both magpie and Amanda are onto something - why on 
earth would Snape keep quiet about Sirius's involvement in the 
creation of the Maurauder's Map  *especially* once Sirius was 
known to have escaped from Azkaban, and particularly when he 
was known to be headed for Hogwarts?  It would indicate he 
knew a lot of hidden ways in and out of the castle, among other 
things.
