Amanda,

I guess you have a point.  There can be serious doubt that Black 
knows how to generate a Patronus under the best of circumstances.  
The only magic we've seen him do involves Transfiguration (animagus, 
conjuring manacles, causing Pettigrew to reveal himself).  Perhaps 
Black is a clever wizard, but he's not the greatest at DADA, which is 
Lupin's expertise.
