Lupin could have told him. Lupin knows Harry was 
not allowed in Hogsmeade, and he and Harry could have had lots of 
opportunities for conversation during Harry's anti-dementor lessons. 
Lupin and Sirius could have gotten in touch by owl once they had left 
Hogwarts.
