It could also be partly a matter of survival.  Ron remarks at one
point "If we hadn't married Muggles we'd have all died out by
now."  Maybe the wizarding community by itself is too small to
prevent dangerous inbreeding.  (Draco Malfoy, now, seems like the
epitome of the shockingly inbred aristocrat to me.  :) )
