  The victims of the dementors appear to become the opposite of 
ghosts. Ghosts are "departed," ie Dead-But-Not-Gone, victims 
are "demented," or Gone-But-Not-Dead.  (And then of course there are 
the more populous categories of "Dead-And-Gone" and the ever 
popular "Not-Dead-And-Not-Gone.")
