Well, one of the reasons your theory doesn't work is because we are told that 
Remus is a Gryffindor. Personally I believe that if they were such close 
friends that they even became animagi together that they were all in the same 
house. We see from current Hogwarts that while one is usually on friendy 
terms with the other houses they aren't really close friends. .
