Don't get rid of your theory yet!  Remember, Hermione said in PoA 
that the list she saw is for animagi this (20th) century--  
Dumbledore may be on the 19th century list of animagi.  

If Dumbledore is an animagus, what do you think he turns into?  I 
imagine that he becomes an animal with wings.  Also, do you think 
that his animal appearance appears to age with him, or does he become 
younger every time he transforms?
