I'm not sure whether we shouldn't take this discussion over to OT- chatter, but so far there haven't been any admin warnings...

I think that there will be as many PsOV as there are personal experiences with writing.

My own experience was:

1) I've always wanted to write something myself, but after a rather daunting experience at the age of 8 where a detective story I had begun ended abruptly at the bottom of the first page because everybody was dead, I didn't really believe I could do it, and that for nearly 30 years.

2) Discovering the vast universe of HP fanfiction ( I had never heard of ff of any kind before), it occurred to me that this might be a first step towards writing, something in the middle between an original creation and- well, nothing. (Strangely, writing in a foreign language proved to be very helpful, probably because of the smaller linguistic backpack)

3) This realization set loose some plot bunnies who kept nibbling at my brain until I gave in and started writing. This was when I became aware that, if I wanted to stay as close as possible to canon (and I didn't intend to use merely the names, I wanted the characters), I had to find my own backstories, explanations, justifications etc. Not that I *couldn't* do it in a more analytic way, it's just more fun and less trouble to weave it into a plot.

"And how come those portraits seem to be alive?"

"What'ya mean? All paintings move."

"No, they don't. We have lots of paintings in our villa, among them a real Chagall, and none of them..."

"And d'ya expect that something painted by a jackal will move? Now really..."
