Right on, Calypso!

And Red XIV responded:

who wants them to be together because of BOTH characters, and not just
because Ron obviously likes her.>

I also felt that there was an attraction on both sides (but I didn't
see it as early as CoS). I saw the attraction from Hermione when she
was annoyed that it seemed to take Ron so long to notice she was a
girl in GoF and then later, when she told Ron that he should have
asked her straight out to the Yule Ball instead of using her as a last
resort. While I think Hermione was flattered that Victor Krum asked
her to the Ball, I also think that she was hurt that Ron did not.

I see Ron's attraction to Hermione not as a consolation prize, but
more realistically; in some ways, Hermione reminds me of Molly
Weasley. She is tough on others (something Ron sometimes needs) and
can be quite maternal at times. Ron, like many boys, may be
subconsciously seeking out someone who is like his mother. Hermione
may be looking at Ron as someone who has what she lacks; he is
adventurous, funny, not so uptight about following every last rule,
etc. They *might* be able to balance each other out.

I don't see how anyone could see Hermione as a consolation prize.
Anyone who does that does not, IMO, understand her character at all.
She is too strong to be something as insulting as that.
