Folks,

Are you sure you aren't letting the film influence your impression of
Flitwick? Given that Warwick Davis played both the head goblin and
Flitwick, I'm suspicious of this sudden discussion of their physical
resemblance. Perhaps I'm in the minority.

Prior to the film (well, actually, still!), I *never* imagined
Flitwick to look remotely like a little person. Skating onto a touchy
topic for a moment, there are physical characteristics of several
types of Dwarfism that Davis possesses: the overlarge hands and feet
in comparison to the length of the limbs; a tendency to be overweight;
and bowed legs and arms. Even with all the makeup, IMO, Davis is
unmistakably a dwarf.

I wish I could find a reference for the actor, but there is a
recurring character on Boston Public this year who is my picture of
the charms professor. The chemistry teacher this season is a very
short man, but still proportioned normally and reasonably thin for his
age. (I estimate he's about 55.) This is how I imagine Flitwick, down
to the receding hairline--very sprightly and quick.

There's actually a variant of Dwarfism called ateliotic dwarfism,
which according to my Stedman's is "of unknown cause characterized by
normal proportions and, by currently available criteria, functional
normality but with abnormally short stature." [Stedman's Medical
Dictionary, 25th ed., p.473. Hensyl, W. ed.] Flitwick might fall under
this category, but not the "classic" munchkin-type dwarf of Billy
Barty, Warwick Davis, or the cast of Time Bandits.

On a lighter topic, Elizabeth reacted strongly to Cindy's statement:
> > Cindy (who will probably never fall for Flitwick while Sirius and
> > Lupin are around)
>
> DO YOU PEOPLE THINK OF NOTHING ELSE????? Who will Hermione end up with?
> Are the students having sex in the halls of Hogwarts? Who's cuter,
Sirius
> or Snape? Tune in next week, for the next episode of "As the Wizard
World
> Turns"!
>
> WHO CARES????? AAARRRRGGHHHHHH!!!!!!
>
> <struggles to control breathing and return to relative calm>
>
> Sorry, Cindy, I know you didn't deserve that. But I feel much better
now.
> I'll try not to let it happen again. Really.

Chuckle. Get used to it, Elizabeth. And count yourself lucky. One of
my mailing lists boasts that we can reduce any topic (and I mean *any*
topic) to a discussion of sex in 6 messages or less. And usually we're
right.

By comparison, the folks on HP4GU are far from sex-crazed lunatics.
But we do seem to spend a lot of time on it....Well, okay, maybe we
are. But only as it relates to HP...hm, that doesn't sound right
either, does it?

Gwen (stopping before she gets in *more* trouble--hee!)
