While I think Lupin probably has an interesting backstory, and the 
theories put forth are quite plausible.

On the limited question of why the letters on his briefcase are 
peeling even though he may have only recently learned he was a 
professor, the answer might be a little different.  I imagine that 
Lupin learns over the summer that he has the Hogwarts job.  He either 
owns or procures an old briefcase.  He uses a charm to put his name 
on it.  But like the charm Ron uses to remove the lace from his dress 
robes, he not that good at the charm, and the results are less than 
perfect.  Ron gets frayed sleeves with his handiwork, and Lupin gets 
peeling letters with his attempt.
